How good is YOUR vision?

I had to look twice myself on this one. Only in Fairhaven would you see something like this. If you do need an eye examination, check out an American Optometric optometrist who can help you see clearly again.

What I Like about the Ted Baker Morph

All of us have – or have had in the past – an item of apparel that when worn, you would receive a ton of complements.  I have a pair of Ted Baker frames that always gets compliments – as will the new Morph B175. The strong rectangle shape has been softened by a mild pillowing on the top and bottom rims. Then it starts to get interesting – it has a nice, wide (but not too wide) sharply delineated end piece, stylish but business serious. That’s where the turbo styling kicks in with vertically vented metal ribs with an understated Ted Baker Logo camouflaging the temple core. The temple is laminated plastic, with a thin deep almost indescribable blue/purple color and a deep dusk autumn red on the inside. Combined with a satin gunmetal front with just the barest hint purple and you have a frame that will be at home with pinstripes or baggy surfer shorts – and the spring hinges have you covered for when life gets just a touch too exciting.

Frame shape - which one is right for YOUR face?

Picking out the right shape frame for your face can be daunting, as most of us don't know the "rules". One of the most fun parts of my job is to work with people and find that "perfect" shape that really creates the WOW factor - although sometimes it pays to break the rules! Here is an article that does a great, but concise job of explaining shape and color for frame selection. Licensed Dispensing Opticians LOVE to work with people to find that perfect pair of glasses for YOU!

How can you tell if you need computer glasses?

“OH, my aching neck!!” How many times have you said that after sitting in front of your computer for awhile? If you’re on the 40 side of life, you have more than likely experienced soreness in your shoulders and neck, and visual fatigue after spending much time staring at the monitor. The primary cause of your fatigue is most likely that you are using a general purpose lens design to try and do computer work.

Think about it: in vehicles, there are sports cars, SUV’s, sedans, wagons, small pick-up trucks, large pick-up trucks, vans and ultra-compact vehicles. Each of them serves a primary purpose – you would not try and pull a trailer with a sports car, or haul around the soccer team in an ultra-compact two-seater. OK, I’ve put maybe 500 pounds of bricks in the back of my mini-SUV, but was a bit apprehensive all the way home! There are definite compromises or risks when vehicles are used for tasks for which they are NOT designed.

The no-line progressive power lenses you wear on a daily basis are designed to give you great distance vision, decent near vision, and some mid-range use. Not surprisingly, mid-range is the area you use the most when working on a computer – or art and craft projects, in the shop, cooking – on and on. So, it doesn’t take long for it to become apparent that you are sacrificing efficiency, ease, comfort and performance by using the wrong tool for the job.

Over the years I have tried a number of solutions – single focus lenses set just for the computer – but then I can’t read small print, and I would get vertigo trying to see further than the end of my arms! Not a good choice. I’ve tried lined bifocals for patients, but that was still very much a compromise, and not an ideal solution.

Then Hoya designed the Tact lens. Basically, the whole center of the lens is set to where your entire monitor is clear at a normal working distance, and without having to adjust your head position. There is an extra-large reading zone just below that, so many people will have these double as reading glasses. And that’s not all! At the very top of the lens is a small button that gives “room distance” viewing, so you can walk down the hall and get a cup of coffee, or greet a customer – or even check the clock – without having to change glasses. I have even worn them on my drive home before, wondering why the street signs were blurrier than I remembered! (Not recommended!!)

So, if you have itchy, tired eyes or sore back and neck muscles after a day on the computer, suffer no more! Get the right tool for the job at your quality vision care provider, and you too will understand why I love Tact lenses.

What I Love about Transitions Lenses

For those us fortunate enough to live in NW Washington state, a day trip to LaConner is an enjoyable outing no matter the season. This rustic little town, situated on the Swinomish Channel, has dozens of quaint shops, great eateries, comfortable lodgings, art galleries and more.

Here’s the problem. As we drive there, of course I’m wearing my prescription sunglasses, which work great! We get out of the car, go into a shop, and my wife says “Bill, look at this!” So I go over, and – dang – my sunglasses are just a tad too dark to see the color/detail/price of the item. So I take my sunglasses off, put my clear lenses on, and make the proper appreciative noises. We head back out on the sidewalk – boy, that sun is bright! So, back on with the sunglasses. The next shop is only a few steps away, we go inside, and you can guess the rest.

Then I got Transitions lenses. This tint has some amazing features. Unlike previous changeable tints, it is nearly “paper-white” indoors, so no annoying and unflattering yellow tones to deal with. When you step outside into the full sun, it will darken to true sunglass intensity within one minute – that’s fast! Whereas older changeable tints could take up to 30 minutes to fully lighten when going back inside, Transitions takes just a few minutes.

So now when we go to LaConner, I just put my Transitions glasses on, and I’m good to go! The glasses darken as soon as I step outside the car, then lighten when I enter my favorite place in LaConner (post a comment, and I’ll share it with you). Problem solved – and that’s why I love Transitions lenses! Come on in to any Transitions dealer for a demonstration.

What I love about Drivewear Sunglass lenses!

I recently returned from the classic American Road Trip, from Mount Vernon, WA to Albuquerque, NM and back again, 3,909 miles to be exact. Along the way, we stopped at several national parks, scenic pull-outs, unique small towns, and more. After my iPhone (don’t get me started), the one thing I truly relied on every day was my prescription Drivewear sunglasses.

Drivewear is still pretty new, so you may not have heard about it. Basically, they are both polarized AND transitions (changeable tint) lenses. At their lightest, they are a light medium green tint. This color and intensity of tint works well in low-light situations, such as light rain, fog – even snow! The distinctive color filters out nearly all the blue light (present in rain, fog and snow).  Blue light is the hardest color to focus as it is the shortest wavelength, and disperses in the eye – the exact same reason when we look at water it typically appears blue.

As the brightness increases, the lenses get darker and darker – always exactly the right amount for whatever conditions you find yourself in. And here is the best news – it will darken even behind the windshield of your car! That is radically new technology!

What’s really great about this lens is its versatility. I wore it early in the morning, at evening, and throughout the day. I wore them driving in the car for hours on end. I wore them into the gift shop at the Grand Canyon, where they were more than adequate for me to find a book about the geology on the Colorado Plateau. I wore them on the patio of a funky Taos “New Mexican” restaurant, and into grocery stores where I could still use my debit card and see to punch in my code. It is SO nice to not have to fumble around with changing glasses every time you go in and out of a shop!

I could go on and on about all the places I wore these lenses, all the various activities I’ve done while wearing them. They work so well, they are the only sunglasses I’ve worn for the past two years – and that’s what I love about Drivewear lenses.
